Landscape plugs are deep rooted, smaller versions of the plants you typically see in the nurseries as quart or gallon (or larger) size. Why plant these little beauties instead?

• You get more plants for your money

• An area planted with multiple smaller plants will fill in much more quickly than one planted with a single larger plant

• It is easier and less destructive to tuck these smaller plants among the roots of existing trees or shrubs

• They are a wonderful way to add native plants to container plantings

• Its more ecologically friendly – plugs are grown in trays that are often re-used. No individual pots to manufacture and then discard

While not commonly found at commercial nurseries, they are becoming more available at native plant sales and through online vendors. Landscape plugs have strong root systems that are primed to grow and establish quickly. But due to their size, they still require a bit of care an attention their first season.

• Provide enough loosened soil around the plugs for roots to spread out after planting.

• Provide an organic mulch around the plugs to snuff out weeds and retain moisture until the plants are established.

• The small plants my need some supplemental watering until they get established – especially if they are planted among thirsty tree or shrub roots.

• The smaller plants can be dug up by squirrels and other animals gripped by spring fever - be sure to promptly replant any disturbed plants.
