A deer and rabbit resistant aster!
Asters are beautiful – and they are critical keystone native plants for both bees and caterpillars. But some varieties are frequently browsed by deer and especially rabbits. Aromatic aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium) is one of the exceptions. Its fragrant foliage (hence the name) makes it critter resistant.
With gorgeous blue flowers in fall and very high wildlife value, these asters are a must have for pollinator gardens. This species prefers full sun but can tolerate some shade. It is quite drought resistant once established. Two of my favorite cultivars are ‘October Skies’ – shorter with a round habit and ‘Raydon’s Favorite’ – more upright. The straight species is just lovely as well but can be difficult to find in nurseries.
