Sometimes only a bumblebee will do

Chelone lyonii, a North American native plant also known as “Pink Turtlehead” for the shape of its blossoms, is a boon to bumblebees in late summer and fall. Of all the insect pollinators, only the strong native bumblebees are able to force their way into the flowers to access the nectar. A little end of season treat – just for them. It is fascinating to watch the bees forcing their way in!

The variety ‘Hot Lips’ is a sturdy, upright plant with lovely dark foliage and beautiful pink blossoms that light up the fall garden. Another positive – Chelone is very resistant to deer and rabbit munching. Chelone likes moist soil, but is actually quite drought tolerant once established. It can tolerate full sun, but appreciates a bit of shade in our hot summer area.
