Blueberries… a tasty snack or a fabulous native plant?
Both actually! Blueberries are wonderful native plants that are valuable to caterpillars, bees, birds and pancakes. These shrubs have beautiful flowers in spring, colorful (and tasty!) fruit in summer and stunning red fall foliage. Blueberries are truly both an ecological powerhouse and a lovely, multi-season ornamental plant.
Blueberries do need certain growing conditions in order to thrive, and it is best to plant 2 different varieties to maximize fruiting.
If you would like to give blueberries a try, we will have them for sale at the Master Gardener plant sale on May 11. We have the varieties ‘Duke’ and ‘Elliot’ as large, 3-year-old, fruiting plants. We also have all the information you need to grow these fabulous plants successfully.
